Our Meals Make a Difference

The article below appeared in the Kids Against Hunger Newsletter from New Hope, MN.  Since we also send meals to schools and orphanages in Haiti, we thought that the impact of our meals there would be similar to the results they discribe.

"FROM GARY'S DESK"

(by Gary Korpi, Director of Satellite Operations)

I spoke on the phone today with Dave Oswald, Executive Director of Helping Hands for Haiti.  Dave had just returned from Haiti and was returning a call I had placed to him a week or so ago.  Dave receives food through Darrel Johnson and the satellite in Sioux Falls, SD.  He wanted me to know how much they appreciate getting Kids Against Hunger food and the impact it is having.  He related the following to me:

When we first started getting Kids Against Hunger's meals, our country director was against using it in their feeding programs.  They had been feeding the children rice and beans and the country director did not think the kids would like the taste of the Kids Against Hunger meals.  Dave said they persisted in their desires to use the Kids Against Hunger food and eventually they were successful in introducing it into the schools they run.  Today, they are feeding 500 kids in four different schools and will soon be adding a fifth school.

On his recent trip to Haiti, he was calling the people he works with to see how school registration was going and was quite surprised to hear the numbers they were reporting.  They are anticipating a 40% increase in enrollment in the schools they had been working in.  Dave asked why they thought this might be.  He was given two reasons for the increased numbers: Because of the financial support the schools were receiving from Helping Hands, they were able to decrease the tuition.  The second reason for the increase had to do with parents of children who did not attend the schools.  They observed how the kids who were attending one of these schools had shown great improvement in their health and how they looked - which is attributed to the Kids Against Hunger food - that they wanted their own children to receive these meals.

I am sure I don't have to remind any of you of the importance of what we do.  However, it is always gratifying to hear stories like this.  We are saving lives.

Gary
